Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. As of the time of this posting, there are no definite results from the midterm elections. Voters in one Horry County precinct experienced some confusion over the location of their polling site. The Dunes No. 1 precinct in Myrtle Beach had set up a temporary voting site at Ocean View Education Center instead of the usual fire station in that area of the city. Voters were lining up at the fire station, only to find out that the polling place had been moved for this election. Residents said signage was inadequate and hard to see. (WBTW)
  2. Nicole has been upgraded to a tropical storm and is expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, coastal flooding and possible tornado threats to the Carolinas. Nicole is projected to pass west of the Grand Strand Thursday and Friday. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
  3. Market Common will be getting some road repairs for the next month or so. The $1.6 million project will include milling and paving of roads in the trendy neighborhood of Myrtle Beach, including parts of Farrow Parkway. The work will be performed during the overnight hours, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to avoid disrupting traffic. The work will begin at 7 p.m. November 13. (wpde.com)
  4. More details have emerged surrounding the hours-long standoff between a barricaded man and police last week in North Myrtle Beach's Cherry Grove neighborhood. Adam Hayes, 37, was arrested on several charges and was able to post bond of $171,000. He was released from Long Detention Center on Monday after spending the weekend in jail. Hayes had barricaded himself in a home in Cherry Grove when police arrived to investigate a call about a damaged vehicle and serve him with numerous outstanding arrest warrants. A SWAT team was brought in to assist the police because Hayes had stated he had multiple guns and was ready to "shoot it out with police." (WBTW) (WMBF)
  5. Country music star, Jeff Cook, a co-founding member of the band Alabama and the Alabama Theatre at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach has died. Cook had been living with Parkinson's Disease for many years and was 73 years old. In their younger years, Cook and his bandmates spent summers playing music at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach. In 1993, the group opened the Alabama Theatre. (Alabama Theatre via Facebook) (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
