Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Horry County, Georgetown County and the entire Grand Strand through Friday night. Governor McMaster has declared a state of emergency. Horry County and the city of North Myrtle Beach have declared states of emergency as well. Storm impacts are expected Friday along the South Carolina coast with the Grand Strand being affected throughout the day on Friday. Rain will be heavy with flash flooding and isolated power outages. There is a chance of an isolated tornado. A storm surge watch has been issued north of South Santee River to Little River Inlet. The area should expect 4 to 6 inches of rainfall from the storm and high winds. (WMBF) (WBTW) (wpde.com)
  2. Experts and residents weigh in about the approaching storm with tips, advice and calming reassurance on preparedness. Experts from Horry County Rising say "Don't be alarmed" about flooding potential in Horry County. (wpde.com) Residents say they are not worried about flooding and gusty winds from Ian. (wpde.com)
  3. Horry County Schools: "On Friday, September 30, 2022, all Horry County Schools (HCS) facilities will be closed due to the forecast for inclement weather related to Hurricane Ian. However, HCS will operate on Friday with an eLearning day for all students. (Horry County Schools via Facebook) (wpde.com)
  4. Events postponed and rescheduled due to the storm: Brookgreen Gardens will be closed on Friday with a tentative opening date of Saturday. Pride In The Park has been postponed until October 22. Fire Safety Day with Myrtle Beach Fire Department has been rescheduled to October 22. Barefoot Landing's Oktoberfest has been postponed until October 15. The 2nd Annual Fall Jerk Fest has been rescheduled for October 30. Surfside Beach Family Festival will now be held on November 5. I Love Seafood Fest has been rescheduled to November 4 and 5. More information in the links here: (WMBF) (wpde.com) (WBTW)
  5. Myrtle Beach city council approved the final motion to start creating a surf park in the city. American Surf Parks plans to open the park in 2025 — two years behind schedule due mainly to COVID's usual two-year impact on projects. The park, named Surf Works, will be the largest pool in South Carolina and one of the largest in the United States. The first step is for the developer to close on the purchase of land from the City of Myrtle Beach. Building should begin within about six months to one year. (WMBF)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
