Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Heading into North Myrtle Beach, we've probably all seen the sign indicating that the city is Vanna White's home town. On Friday, White, the long-time, letter-turning co-host of Wheel of Fortune, announced that her father, a native of NMB himself, has died. Vanna White made the announcement on Twitter, and posted a photo of herself and her father, writing, "It is with great sadness that I tell you my 96-year-old dad passed away peacefully this morning. He lived a full and happy life and will be remembered as one of the kindest and most wonderful human beings of North Myrtle Beach. I love you so much dad. RIP." (WMBF)
  2. Data just released by Pew Research Center indicates that the gender wage gap is closing, and Myrtle Beach leads the state of South Carolina with the smallest wage gap for younger, working women. This may be because so many of the tourism and hospitality jobs in the Grand Strand area are traditionally held by women. (WBTW)
  3. Twisted Scissors Beauty Loft, a Myrtle Beach salon, listed itself on a website that helps transgender people find inclusive salons. The owners of Twisted Scissors, Phoenix Mullen and Marie Cusaac, joined the Strands for Trans website as soon as they learned about the site, and they are encouraging more Grand Strand salons to join the site. Their salon is the only Myrtle Beach area salon listed on Strands for Trans. (WBTW)
  4. Horry County Planning Commission held a workshop this week to address a handful of development proposals that could have an impact on the rural character of areas such as Conway, Aynor and Loris, west of the beaches. Developers and property owners have their eye on developing the more rural areas of the western part of Horry County, that has become a hotspot for possible growth. The commission has to walk a fine line between keeping the character and feel of the rural community, while allowing smart and wise development choices. Another meeting will be held April 7 in Conway. (wpde.com)
  5. Myrtle Beach's "oldies" station, 93.9 Carolina Gold is one of several businesses that had to start over after a fire destroyed their office plaza on Grissom Parkway last October. Owner Steven Clendenin said it took about three months to rebuild the radio station, basically from scratch, after all their equipment was destroyed in the fire. Crews have been rebuilding the plaza for some time, but most of the businesses affected relocated elsewhere. (WMBF)

From my notebook:

  • I think this is the best description of Myrtle Beach that I've seen — "The Myrtle Beach area is often featured in numerous magazines, blogs and websites. Popularly known as the Grand Strand, Myrtle Beach is one destination made up of 14 unique communities that stretch 60 miles along the northeast coast of South Carolina." (VisitMyrtleBeach.com)
  • The Southern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha, and the United Negro College Fund, partnered to host a college fair for high schoolers in Myrtle Beach this week. The fair connected students with HBCU admissions officers from across the region, and some students received scholarships. (WBTW)
  • Assistant Director of Public Information Meredith Helline, City of Myrtle Beach: Myrtle Beach welcomes nearly 10,000 athletes for sports tourism events this weekend, with another 10,000 expected later this month. Here's a list of events happening at our facilities (list in link). (Nextdoor)
  • The owners of Mr. Sub wanted to thank the Myrtle Beach community as they closed their doors on Thursday after 43 years of business. Recognized as one of the staples of Myrtle Beach, the sub shop started in 1979 by Ken Conley, who expressed his thanks to the community after selling the last of his famous sub sandwiches. Conley is retiring and looking forward to spending time with his grandchildren. (WBTW)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
