Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Tropical Storm Nicole is bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and a possible isolated tornado threat to the region. As of the time of this posting, a tornado watch has been issued until 3 p.m. Friday for Horry County. The storm will bring wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph along the coast, but slightly lesser gusts for inland areas of Horry County. There could be power outages, but nothing significant is expected. There will be heavy rain in the morning, but we have been in drought conditions so this rain is needed. There should not be significant flooding. A high surf advisory is in place throughout the day with breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet and beach erosion. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
  2. A Grand Strand woman purchased two scratch tickets at Lowe's Foods on Fresh Drive and came out $200,000 ahead! The woman says she rarely buys lottery tickets. When she realized she had won, she made sure her husband was sitting down before she informed him of the big win. His reaction: "Are you kidding me?" The pair will invest their winnings. The grocery store receives a $2,000 commission. (WMBF) (WBTW)
  3. An Horry County judge denied accused murderer Meagan Jackson's request for a modification to her bond conditions. Jackson had requested to be allowed to travel to Whiteville, NC with her employer in order to remodel a church. (WBTW)
  4. In Veterans Day news, HGTC spent the day on Thursday honoring veterans with the reopening of the HGTC veterans resource center on the Conway campus of the college. There are approximately 200 veterans who are students at Horry-Georgetown Tech. (wpde.com) The annual Veterans Victory Walk normally held on November 11 has been postponed to Saturday, November 12 at Valor Park in Market Common because of weather. The 22-mile walk represents the 22 veterans per day who die from suicide. The walk will start at 6 a.m. Saturday and all funds raised will support local veterans.(wpde.com)
  5. Horry County Animal Care Center has reached full capacity and the organization is looking for people to adopt pets so it can offer space to other needy animals. HCACC has dogs, cats, chickens and a rabbit all available for adoption. All adoption fees will be waived through December 31. All pets at HCACC are up-to-date on vaccines, they are spayed or neutered and microchipped. The shelter is closed for Veterans Day but will reopen Saturday morning at 10:30. (WBTW)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
