Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. North Myrtle Beach Police have stated in an incident report that a Virginia driver whose vehicle went airborne, overturned, caught fire, damaged a house, five vehicles and three golf carts is likely to be charged with reckless driving. The driver and one passenger in the car were brought to the hospital after the fiery crash early Sunday morning on Ocean Boulevard. Later on, the driver was taken to MUSC. Approximately 50 people were evacuated from three homes Sunday morning as a precaution. One of those dwellings is a group home with residents who have special needs. (WBTW)
  2. Doc Antle's lawyers have requested that a pretrial conference scheduled for August 30 be delayed, along with the planned jury selection process slated for September 30. It appears that the motion has been granted. In his motion for a continuance, Antle waived his right to a speedy trial. (WMBF)
  3. The Wall of Service at Warbird Park displays more than 3,000 names of service members and civilians who served at the former Air Force base. If you or a loved one served before the base closed in 1993, you may purchase a nameplate for the wall. The city is hoping to include as many names as possible to be honored at the wall. Officials are looking for people who served at the former base from 1941 through 1993. The nameplates are made of granite and cost $20 each. They can be ordered online. (WMBF)
  4. All of Horry County Animal Care Center's animals are back at its main facility according to a county spokesperson. The center is no longer using Tamroc Kennels as a satellite location. The shelter is still at capacity with 181 animals in residence. All adoption fees for all animals are being waived. Currently, there are 51 dogs, one cat and one pig that are available for adoption. The shelter is located on Industrial Park Road in Conway, and is open weekdays and Saturdays starting at 10:30 a.m. (MyHorryNews)
  5. Chapin Library is bringing back its interactive story time program in Myrtle Beach. The program will happen at John M. McLeod neighborhood park every other Wednesday at 10 a.m. On alternating Wednesdays, the program will be held at Savannah's Playground in Market Common. The children's outdoor program focuses on reading, songs and dancing so that kids can move around while learning. There is no age requirement, but the design of the plan is to get small children ready for a classroom environment. (wpde.com)

Sunrises on the entire Grand Strand are incredible! This photo comes from reader Kate Stephens who captured orange skies over the ocean at South Litchfield Beach on the South Strand. Thanks for the stunning picture, Kate!

You're all caught up for Thursday. I'll be here Friday morning with another Myrtle Beach update!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
