Volunteers Needed+Plane Lands On Road+Good News For Pets+COVID-19
Welcome to the Myrtle Beach Daily! This is your source for the most important things going on in and around the Grand Strand.

Good day, neighbors! It's me again, Kathy Mandell, your host of the Myrtle Beach Daily. Today is Friday, the 13th! In today's top stories, I'll let you know about this weekend's Wheel to Surf event needing volunteers, a small plane that departed Myrtle Beach made an emergency landing on a road in the Upstate, more details on Horry County's new animal ordinance, a county school board member is in the hospital with coronavirus, and some parents and teachers are hesitant about back-to-in-person school.
First, here's what's up with today's weather: Partly cloudy. High: 87 Low: 75.
Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Adaptive Surf Project is looking for volunteers to help disabled people surf at this weekend's Wheel To Surf event. The event is August 14 and 15, starting at 8:00 A.M. in Surfside Beach at 13th Avenue. The organization is also looking for volunteers for another event. You can sign up by visiting their website, listed in the link. (wpde.com)
- A private small plane that left Myrtle Beach Thursday morning had to make an emergency landing in Union, South Carolina on Union Boulevard. The pilot was en route to Knoxville, Tennessee. No one was hurt in the process. (WBTW)
- New changes to Horry County's Animal Ordinance include a ban on commercial sale of dogs and cats. It will be illegal to drive with dogs in the back of a pickup truck if the road's speed limit is 55 mph or higher. Outdoor pet regulations will be updated to be sure pets have shade during the summer. A spay and neuter program, and a trap-neuter-release program for feral cats are also included. The changes will be read at the council's August 17th meeting. (WPDE)
- Horry County School Board member, Ray Winters, is hospitalized with COVID-19, and on a ventilator, according to Rep. Tom Rice, who posted about the District 3 representative on social media. Rice said Winters is "in rough shape". HC Schools spokesperson Lisa Bourcier did not comment on Winters' condition due to medical privacy concerns. (MyHorryNews.com)
- The current rise in COVID-19 cases in the Myrtle Beach and Grand Strand area is giving some teachers and parents pause about a safe return to the classroom. There are presently over 200 Horry County student athletes in quarantine, and some educators are concerned about face-to-face learning in the middle of the Delta variant surge. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
