Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The man who engaged police in an hours-long standoff that prompted the evacuation of several homes near Little River Road in Myrtle Beach has been identified and charged. William Berry Hodges of Roanoke, Virginia was arrested and charged with ten counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, second-degree arson, cruelty to animals and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The police report indicates that Hodges allegedly hit a victim in the head with a hammer and threatened to kill the victim, whom he also restrained. The victim was able to escape. Hodges is accused of firing shots at officers several times. No one was injured but property damages did occur. According to police, Hodges set a mattress on fire inside the dwelling. A deceased dog was found that apparently died in the fire. (WBTW) (wpde.com) (WMBF)

Nominate a local hero. Heroes aren't just the people behind grand gestures and life-saving measures. They're also folks from all walks of life who make things better in Myrtle Beach with small gestures, acts of selflessness, or just by showing up. We're working with our friends at T-Mobile to give thanks — and a bit of recognition — to some of these folks. So if you know a teacher, health care provider, veteran or someone else who's making a difference in Myrtle Beach, give them a shoutout! Just fill out this form, and we'll do the rest, by following up and doing stories about them on Patch, so the whole neighborhood can celebrate how awesome they are.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
