Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Wacatee Zoo has permanently closed after a highly-publicized lawsuit brought against it by PETA and the expiration of a USDA permit. The animals are being transferred to a facility in North Carolina. Animal activists have been focused on the roadside zoo for quite some time. A lawyer for the zoo said the cost of continuing litigation was one factor for the zoo's decision to close its doors. (MyHorryNews.com) (WBTW) (wpde.com)
- Two local women have been charged with stabbing a Myrtle Beach man who they both were dating. One woman lived with the man, according to arrest warrants, and confronted him about his relationship with the other woman on Sept. 8. She is accused of getting a kitchen knife when the three of them were involved in an argument in the home. One woman is accused of holding the victim down while the other woman stabbed him. The two face a number of charges each. The woman accused of doing the stabbing is being held without bond. The other woman who held down the victim was released on personal recognizance and $7,500 bond. The victim was stabbed in the leg and neck. (WMBF)
- The TSA is warning travelers of consequences for improperly bringing firearms through security checkpoints after seven guns were found at Myrtle Beach International Airport on separate occasions so far this year. As the holiday season grows near, the TSA wants travelers to understand that they can face heavy fines or jail time for improperly storing firearms and/or carrying guns in carry-on bags. (wpde.com)
- Myrtle Beach City Council voted "yes" on its first reading of the proposed surf park that would be the first such venue in South Carolina. A motion was made to sell 21.6 acres to MHI Capital, LLC for the park. The land is said to be valued at about $4.5 million. Two council members voted against the motion. Arguing for the move, Assistant City Manger Brian Tucker said it would bring an attraction and an amenity to the city that is currently not available and would create an ideal environment for sports tourism opportunities. (wpde.com) City Council also agreed to buy several lots of land that would solve flooding issues in the downtown Myrtle Beach area. The purchases would cost about $10 million. (wpde.com)
- A North Myrtle Beach doctor is one of five physicians to plead guilty in a pain pill prescription scheme that involved clinics in West Virginia and Virginia. William Earley of North Myrtle Beach pleaded guilty to prescribing controlled substances that were not for legitimate medical purposes in a scheme connected with the Hope Clinic based in WV and VA. Earley faces up to five years in prison and a half-million dollar fine. (wpde.com)
Myrtle Beach pic of the day:
Reader madeline576 sent in this photo of two pelicans hanging out on Garden City Beach. Pelicans are fascinating creatures that live together cooperatively in colonies. Thanks for the cute photo, Madeline!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
