Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Summer-like weather takes the top spot in today's news! Today will be very warm and sunny, with temps heading towards the upper 70s on the Grand Strand. Get out there and enjoy it, because rain is coming — and we need it! Rain is expected Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and should help with current drought conditions. Temperatures will cool off when the rain comes, too. (WMBF)
  2. Regardless of the expected rain, the South Carolina Forest Commission has issued a statewide Red Flag Fire Alert. This type of alert is designed to discourage people from outdoor burning when weather conditions present an elevated risk of wildfire. There has been a dramatic increase in fires throughout the state recently, and the commission is concerned that fire departments may become overwhelmed. (WPDE)
  3. Myrtle Beach police have arrested a suspect in a March 1 shooting that happened near 14th Avenue North and North Ocean Boulevard. Lashawn Jarrett of North Carolina was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery in the first degree, discharging a firearm into a vehicle, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and simple possession of marijuana. The shooting happened when Jarrett and another person had an altercation inside of a car. Jarrett also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. A parked car was hit by several shots as well. (WBTW)
  4. An Horry County school bus driver was in court after police say he attempted to forcibly remove a lunchbox from a student who was eating a snack while on the school bus. Jimmie Patterson, 75, had no prior criminal record and has lived in Horry County for several decades. The 10-year-old child's mother appeared at Patterson's bond hearing and said her son has a bruised lip and a swollen eye from the encounter. Patterson was charged with unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person. He was released on a personal recognizance bond of $10,000, contingent on the promise that he show up for all future court appearances. Patterson is on administrative leave from the school district, where he has been employed since 2015. (WMBF)
  5. On Saturday, the Horry County Museum held a Quilts of Valor ceremony for women veterans in recognition of Women's History Month. The museum's 28th annual Quilt Gala lasts all month long, and awards handmade quilts to local veterans. To recognize the women veterans, the museum partnered with the Myrtle Beach Shorebirds Quilts of Valor group. (wpde.com) On Sunday, the MB Shorebirds group also presented a quilt to Lt. Colonel (Retired) James "JD" Davis after the Songs & Letters of WWII show, presented by Traveling Literary Theatre and Blue Star Mothers of Coastal Carolina. I was there to see the show and the presentation, it was very moving!

Now you're in the loop and ready to head out the door on this Monday. I'll see you Tuesday for the next installment of the Myrtle Beach Daily!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
