Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Locals Robbie and Meg Crompton posted this photo of two waterspouts spotted off the coast of Pawley's Island on Saturday. The Crompton's posted the pic in Patch's Neighbor Posts section. Hey, that works! Thanks for the cool photo and I hope you both stayed safe getting that shot! (Myrtle Beach Patch) WMBF and ABC15 also posted waterspout photos and videos from readers on Saturday. Meteorologists report that the waterspouts were part of a system of storms off the coast near Murrells Inlet to the South Santee River. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
- Willow Tree RV Resort and Campground has reported that it is seeing record-breaking numbers of reservations at the campground this year. Management says around 600 people are booked at the campground for Labor Day Weekend. Campers describe Willow Tree as their "favorite" campground after having checked out several other places. The family-friendly camping area offers lots of activities and there is plenty of room so campers are not packed together tightly. Down the road, Myrtle Beach Travel Park says it is expecting nearly 7,000 people this weekend. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach International Airport also estimates approximately 7,000 passengers went through the airport on Friday either departing from or arriving at MYR. Hotel occupancy rates in Horry County are slightly down as compared to pre-pandemic numbers. However, the most recent numbers are from last week, not Labor Day Weekend. The Grand Strand is still a hugely popular destination for the holiday weekend. South Carolina's gasoline prices are significantly lower than those in other states making that part of the appeal for vacationers within driving distance. (wpde.com)
- Curious about updates on the downtown Myrtle Beach revitalization project? Here are a couple articles from My Horry News on the topic. Demolitions continued this week when crews began tearing down the former Oasis Motel on 7th Avenue North. The Sea Palms is scheduled to be demolished soon after some hazardous material abatement happens. (Myhorrynews) "Phase 1B" for the downtown master plan is moving forward. The focus there is on water and sewer infrastructure. The project completion date for this phase is 2027. (Myhorrynews)
Myrtle Beach pic of the day:
Doesn't this photo look like a postcard? Wow! Reader Sylvia Chassner took this shot from the balcony of Bay View Condos. The pier is 2nd Avenue Pier near 5th Avenue at Beach Park. Thanks for the awesome picture, Sylvia!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
