Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A person was arrested in connection with last weekend's shooting at Hollywood Wax Museum. Myrtle Beach Police say the suspect fled to the Charleston, South Carolina area, where he was taken into custody on Monday with the help of a U.S. Marshal Task Force. He is being held at Charleston County Detention Center awaiting transport back to Myrtle Beach. The shooting victim had a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. (WMBF)
  2. Monday was North Myrtle Beach City Council's turn to have its annual retreat in Pinopolis. The biggest outcome of the retreat is that the council has decided to hold the line on the property tax millage, currently set at 45 mills. Basically, this means NMB residents will not see a tax increase next year, and probably not for the next five years. There will also be no increases in other city fees. A pass-through rate change by Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority is likely to occur. The proposed $162.7 million city budget has built-in contingencies to offset economic emergencies or downturns. (Myhorrynews)
  3. Myrtle Beach and Socastee will receive approximately $2.97 million from the federal government as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Infrastructure investment and Jobs Act. The funding will pay for transit projects, it was announced on Monday by SC Rep. James Clyburn (D). (WBTW)
  4. Gas prices on the Grand Strand are 15.5 cents lower than a month ago, but they crept up slightly this past week by about 4.5 cents per gallon. The average price in the Myrtle Beach area is $3.78 per gallon according to GasBuddy. (WMBF)
  5. A retired Minnesota teacher stopped in to Myrtle Beach on Easter Sunday as part of his ride for cancer research. Al Reszel is on his fifth cross-country bicycle trip with his wife, Terry, who survived breast cancer 11 years ago. This year's trip started in San Diego, California, and is bringing them to New York after stops in Florida, Myrtle Beach, and other spots along the east coast. The pair has raised $32,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, but they haven't reached their fundraising goal for this year. Follow them at Pink Pedals 4 A Cure, or on Facebook. (WBTW)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Tuesday's pic of the day comes from Sheron Watson, who submitted this cute pic of a green anole lizard, perched on some flowers. Otherwise known as anolis carolinensis, the Carolina green anole, or the Carolina anole, these tree dwellers can change color from brown to green, and they dine mainly on small insects. Thanks for the photo, Sheron!

You're all caught up for Tuesday, everyone! I'll be in your inbox Wednesday with another Grand Strand update.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
