First, today's weather:

Sunny skies all day, and clear skies at night. High: 80 Low: 61.

Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. The South Carolina Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement Class 744 included eight recruits who were added to the Horry County Police Department following Friday's graduation ceremonies. The 12-week training program prepares graduates to become class one officers in police departments throughout the state. Horry County Police Chief Joe Hill was a guest speaker at the graduation ceremony. The eight recruits will begin field training now. (WBTW)
  2. A huge turnout is expected for this week's Fall Bike Rally, two weeks after the well-attended 9/11 motorcycle memorial ride. The annual autumn motorcycle festival officially begins on Monday, but bikers are already rolling in to start celebrating. Local businesses are hoping things are returning to normal after a year of cancelled and scaled-back events. The county issued more than 35 vendor permits for the event that goes through October 3rd. (WMBF)
  3. Coastal Carolina Realtor's Association stated in a press release issued this week that the local housing market is saturated and many potential buyers are sitting this one out, choosing to rent temporarily until more real estate becomes available. CEO Laura Crowther says a lot of people want to relocate to the Grand Strand area, sooner than they had originally planned. Buyers are discouraged at the lack of property available, the prices that continue to increase in the once affordable community, and competition between buyers with cash and those who need home loans. Supply inventory cannot meet demand right now. Rent may be the way to go for now. Crowther says a slowdown of demand, nationwide, is predicted. (wpde.com)
  4. FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program's rating structure is about to change. The adjustments that will begin on October 1st are designed to correct inequities within the program. Over one million policyholders are expected to notice a decrease in payments. With thousands of properties in the Myrtle Beach vicinity threatened by flood waters, this is good news for folks who own older homes. Those homeowners will no longer pay more than their fair share of flood insurance premiums. It will be the first time in history that policyholders will see their rates go down at renewal time. (WBTW)
  5. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers for the rest of hurricane season. There are still sixty days or more remaining in hurricane season, which ends in December. The organization is hoping to fill at least 200 volunteer positions. Volunteers support recovery workers, health professionals and disaster shelters. It is also looking for health professional volunteers to work in disaster shelters to provide health care in accordance with their licensing, such as RNs, LPNs, EMTs and paramedics. The Red Cross needs to train all volunteers so they'll be at the ready in case disaster relief is needed. (MyHorryNews.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
