Here are the top three stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Weather takes the top spot in today's news! After about ten gorgeous summer-like, sunny days to punctuate the holiday season, a powerful cold front moved in on Sunday, bringing with it the possibility of strong winds, heavy rain and a temperature dive. As of the time of this posting, thunderstorms and overnight rain were still expected late Sunday. Monday will be windy and much colder, with highs in the 40s, possibly straining to reach 50 degrees. Temps will head towards the 60s one or two days this week. (WMBF)
  2. Georgetown County Sheriff's deputies along with the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire department investigated a report of someone dumping gasoline in a storm drain on Highway 17 Business. The incident happened at Perry's Bait & Tackle shop at the north end of the Marshwalk area of Murrells Inlet. SCDHEC was also called in to assess the situation, which was declared not to be a danger to the general public. There is not yet any information on whether charges were, or would be, filed in the case. (Live 5 News WCSC)
  3. Along with yesterday's report on Horry County Fire Rescue's huge increase in 911 calls, North Myrtle Beach Fire also ended 2021 with a record number of calls handled. The department logged over 5,900 calls in 2021, and just like HCFR its final 2021 call happened just before midnight on New Year's Eve. The department broke the previous record that was set in 2020. It has already responded to several incidents in 2022, with the first call coming in at 1:00 a.m. just after the new calendar year began. (WBTW)

  • Friends, family, and colleagues honored Sgt. Gordon Best on Saturday night at a private memorial event to honor the fallen NMBPD sergeant on the one-year anniversary of his death. The officer's father, Gordon Best, Sr., spoke at the memorial. Fellow officers donned his badge number 178 on their badges, or wore a black line across their badge, symbolizing camaraderie with Sgt. Best. A permanent memorial for fallen NMB officers is being planned and will be displayed in front of the department's headquarters. (WMBF)
  • Former NASA astronaut, Michael "Rich" Clifford died last week from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was 69 years old. The West Point graduate from California lived in North Myrtle Beach with his wife, Nancy for the last nine years. They enjoyed going to the Music on Main concert series on Thursday nights, as well as golfing. When working for NASA, Clifford went to Russian space station Mir, and was the first American to take a spacewalk while docked onto an orbiting space station. (NewsObserver.com)

Alrighty, you're all good for Monday, January 3, 2022! See you Tuesday for another Myrtle Beach update.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
