Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The wintry weather inland took the lives of two Myrtle Beach residents on Sunday in North Carolina. Latron Williams and Katie Joe Janta were driving southbound on Interstate 95 in Nash County, NC when treacherous road conditions caused their blue Honda CRV to veer off the road and hit several trees on a median strip. (WMBF)
- News13 has released an analysis report of 2021 shootings within the network's viewing area, which includes Myrtle Beach and Horry County as well as several other counties, including two in North Carolina. There were 385 shootings in the station's broadcast area. The exact data for 2021 will be released later this year. South Carolina ranked 5th in the nation for homicides in 2019 according to the CDC. (WBTW)
- Another lucky Myrtle Beach resident played a winning ticket in the Mega Millions drawing, winning a partial jackpot of $20K. The person bought their ticket at Food Lion on South Kings Highway. With no big winner, the main jackpot for the game grew to $347 million for tonight's drawing. (wpde.com)
- A former waiter at LuLu's North Myrtle Beach is suing the restaurant for having her perform non-tip-based tasks at less than minimum wage. Katie Burdick worked for LuLu's from 2018 through August of 2021, and was a server captain. The claim states she worked in excess of the amount of time lawfully allowed for non-tip work tasks, and also that she worked overtime during the summer months but was not compensated with overtime wages. The restaurant requires that all wait staff pool their tips. Working in the kitchen or cleaning are considered non-tip tasks for which restaurant workers are to be paid minimum wage. (WBTW)
- The lower gas prices reported here during the past two weeks was short-lived. Myrtle Beach gas prices rose 3.3 cents per gallon last week. The average price in Myrtle Beach is now $2.98 a gallon, still lower than the national average. Gas experts warn that unrest overseas in oil producing nations will cause prices to rise significantly within the next two months. (WMBF)
Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera's drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.
Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
