Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that it will add 35,000 temporary work visas this spring and summer to help American businesses that are experiencing worker shortages. This is great news for Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand area. The tourism and hospitality industry relies on non-citizen workers on H-2B visas for a large part of its workforce. The past two years have been difficult without those workers, and the industry continues to experience a shortage of employees ahead of the 2022 tourism season. (WBTW) (Press Release Desk)
- Also returning after a two-year absence is the Monday after the Masters golf tournament at the Dye Club in Barefoot Resort. The event kicks off with a welcome party. Also happening is a silent auction, and a concert by Hootie & the Blowfish and Friends. The Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation raises funds at the event and gives that money to South Carolina education. Funds from the tournament also benefit the SC Junior Golf Association, and benefits music education throughout South Carolina. (WMBF)
- Waccattee Zoo has been fined $7,800 by the USDA for violating the Animal Welfare Act, says PETA in a press release. The roadside zoo is accused of not providing veterinary care for multiple animals, keeping animals in unsanitary conditions, and more, for a total of six violations occurring between March of 2020 and May of 2021. (WBTW)
- Following up on a story from earlier in the week, the town of Surfside Beach has received a number of proposals from businesses wishing to occupy the new pier when it is completed in 2023. The bids needed to be submitted by noon on Friday for consideration, and are being reviewed by town officials with no date announced as to when decisions would be made. Businesses submitting bids include a surf shop, beachwear shop, a couple of ice cream shops, a bait and tackle store, and several others. (WMBF)
- Horry County Planning Commission's meeting on Thursday included a group of residents objecting to a rezoning proposal in the Carolina Forest community. The plan consists of building more single family homes on Gardner Lacy Road, with a rezoning request to change the area from a Commercial Forest zone to Residential. Community members voiced their concerns about infrastructure issues, traffic, and flooding. The commission recommended approval of the rezoning request in a 9-1 vote, and forwarded the plan to Horry County Council for its next meeting (April 19). (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
