Beech Hill Elementary Near Epicenter of Wednesday Quake
Summerville rolled by a 2.6 magnitude earthquake Wednesday.

The neighborhood across from Beech Hill Elementary was the epicenter for a 2.6 magnitude earthquake at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the exact coordinates were 32.947°N, 80.224°W, which is on Old Course Road off of Highway 61.
The small quake was at 7.5 miles beneath the earth's surface and likely went unfelt by most. Earthquakes at around 2.5 or less are typically unnoticed. Quakes between 2.5 and 5.4 are more likely to be felt, but often don't cause any structural damage, according to Michigan Tech.

According to the survey's "Did You Feel It?" section, 137 people surrounding the epicenter reported the quake.
This is the in the Summerville area, which sits on the active Middleton fault.

According to S.C. Emergency Management Division, 70 percent of the state's earthquakes occur along this fault. The state usually experiences fewer than 15 quakes a year.
The largest magnitude quake to hit the Middleton fault was 7.3 in 1886.
