Book of the Week: The Night Season

In her fourth outing featuring Detective Archie Sheridan, author Chelsea Cainhas crafted a standalone story that serves as an entry point for new readers to her work.

In contrast to the previous three novels, The Night Season distances itself somewhat from the obsessive cat-and-mouse dynamic between Sheridan and serial killer Gretchen Lowell, and instead focuses on a new killer who is taking advantage of flood warnings in the Portland area in order to seek out unsuspecting prey.

As flood waters continue to rise, Detective Sheridan races against the clock with the help of his task force and spunky newspaper reporter Susan Ward in order to end the killer’s murder spree before he canescape.

With her well-developed understanding of her characters, a tightly plotted story, and a highly unusual murder weapon, Cain has created an edge-of-your-seat thriller tha tmakes for an excellent rainy day read.

Just be forewarned: you may find yourself checking the weather reports and avoiding riversides by the time that you finish the novel.
