You cannot tell me that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness," and then tell me that this unequiovocal principle shall be applied selectively.
You cannot tell me that, "No state shall...deny to any person...equal protection of the laws," and then tell me that the government can confer benefits upon one class of those who are pursuing Happiness, while arbitrarily denying it to another.
No government should provide the benefits and inherent integrity attaching to the formal recognition of one's lifelong commitment to the love of another, without extending that benefit to "all men," because we are created equal in the eyes of our Creator, and because "Liberty...and the pursuit of Happiness" is our "inalienable Right."
