Motorcycles, Bicycles and Smashed Heads: A Personal Story

If you ride or your kids do without a helmet, please share this story with them.

Let me say up front I am all for a law that mandates everyone wears a helmet both motorcycles and bike riders young and old.

Years ago, I was riding my racing bike along a paved path. I hit a raised patch and found myself flying through the air making a three point landing — my feet strapped into the bike pedals, my right hip and my head.

I would not be here today if I had not had a helmet on. The helmet was cracked apart, but my head was not. Oh yes, I broke my hip but was still able to ride again both motorcycles and racing bikes.

I was, at the time and for about 8 years later, working as a weekend pastor in a hospital with most of my time spent in the ER. On a number of times we received folks who rode with out helmets. The majority did not survive. Their heads were smashed.

It then became my job to tell their love ones the outcome. Not very pleasent job to say the least. Folks, WEAR YOUR HELMET. If you don't have one buy one. The life you save may be your own.
