Coastal Carolina Fair: 55 Years in the Making
Coastal Carolina Fair opens at 3 p.m. on Thursday and runs through Nov. 5.

Nearly a quarter of a million people went to the Coastal Carolina Fair last year — and for good reason, according to the fair's media and public relations chair Joe Bolchoz.
"We're what we consider a true fair," he said, adding that for 55 years the fair has embodied the spirit of American fairs. "It's an opportunity for the people in the tri-county area to show off their good works and that makes us unique."
Opening at 3 p.m. on Thursday and running through Nov. 5, the Coastal Carolina Fair features agricultural-themed attractions, carnival rides, fair food (fried Twinkie, anyone?), entertainment, artwork and competitions.

According to Bolchoz, the fair is No. 2 in the state, , and No. 5 in the three-state region.
While the fair is all about bright lights, greasy food and good times, it's also for a good cause. In 2010, the fair raised $520,000 for local charities. The rest of the proceeds were used to improve the , Bolchoz said. And those are the only two purposes for money raised at the fair, according to Bolchoz.
The fair was originally purchased by the Exchange Club of Charleston for use as a fundraiser, he said. And just like 55 years ago, it's an all-volunteer operation, save for the professionals they hire to police the grounds and work the rides.
