Committee Recommends Full-Time Hire

Dorchester County public safety, health and human services committee breezes through only agenda item: the vacant emergency management director position.

In less than three minutes of discussion, the county public safety, health and human services committee unanimously agreed to recommend county council hire a full-time emergency management director.

The position has been vacant and the subject to some inquiry into cost-saving measures by committee Chairman and council Vice Chairman George Bailey.

"We have an emergency director and that's what we need; I was a little concerned we would merge two offices together and I do think that would have been a mistake," Councilman Richard Rosebrock said.

The committee recommends the council hire a full-time emergency management director and continue the freeze on the emergency planner position, which has been frozen for three years. Without filling the planner position, the county saves about $48,000 per year, according to Bailey.
