County Chambers Online

Here is what your fellow Dorchester County citizens had to say at the July 18 county council meeting.

Chief Anthony Davidson

Representing homeowners of his tribe near Ridgeville, Davidson asked county council to revoke the license of the community pool hall at 494 Eagle Dr.

"We've been having a lot of problems since it's been open," Davidson said.

He cited gunshots, underaged drinking and other safety issues.

Councilman George Bailey responded: "I think your wish is going to come true."

Sammie Simmons

Simmons brought three concerns before council. First, he wanted sewer extended on Mallard Road near Jedburg to reach nine families. Second, he wanted the county to address flooding issues on the road. And, third, he wanted something to be done about the muddy Mose Circle, which draws mud out onto Mallard Road.

The council voted unanimously to put these items into the public works, property and utilities committee.

Mike Sujka

Although pleased that the council agreed to hire a full-time emergency management director, Sujka insisted council unfreeze the emergency planner position since neighboring counties don't have just one person at the helm of the emergency management division.

"We're very high in South Carolina in terms of our need," Sujka said. "We should not allow our emergency management vacancies to remain … Please support this department."

Council took no action.

John Stauffer

Stauffer, a Summerville resident, requested council end its meetings in St. George.

"You have three-quarters of the population in the county down here in the lower end; it costs me $10 to run to St. George every time you have a meeting up there," Stauffer said. "A majority of things you have to discuss are at the lower end of the county … All the people are down here; all the problems are down here; I think we should have more meetings here in Summerville."

Council took no action.

Ronnie Steele

Steele asked the council to report its position on the congressional redistricting issue.

"I've come to ask that you amend the agenda for tonight," Steele said.

Steele said that while he knows the county is not directly involved in congressional matters, he is certain councilmembers are talking to other elected officials.

"I'd like for this council to let us the citizens know where this county council stands," Steele said.
