County Dubbed 'Palmetto Performer' for Adult Ed

S.C. Department of Education recognized Dorchester County as one of the top five counties in the state with the highest number of high school credentials awarded during the 2010-2011 school year with its Palmetto Performer designation.

More than 240 Dorchester County Adult Education students earned high school credentials this past year.

The department also presented:

• The Palmetto Pride award: Presented to programs that met or exceeded federal performance standards for  English as a Second Language (ESL) for the 2010-2011 school year. Dorchester County Adult Education was the  only  program (out of 54 programs) in the state to receive this award.
• The Correctional Education Career Readiness Certificate Initiative designation: Presented to adult education programs that served incarcerated individuals in a state prison or county detention  center setting. The programs awarded a minimum of 100 CRC credentials for a state prison and a minimum of 25 for a county detention center. More than 30 CRC credentials were earned through Dorchester County Adult Education's CRC Initiative at the Dorchester County Detention Center during the 2010-2011 school year.
• The Career Readiness Award: Presented to the programs issuing the highest number of Career Readiness Certificates during the 2010-2011 school year. In Dorchester County, 671 Career Readiness Certificates were earned through the program. The county also was included among four programs in the state with the highest overall percentage of certificates.
• The Palmetto Trend Setters designation: Presented to adult education programs (based on program size) issuing the highest total number of GED credentials.  In the Large Program (1,200-1,999 students), Dorchester County Adult Education was recognized as one of the top three programs with 235 students earning their GED during the 2010-2011 school year.
