Service Academy Applications Due Soon

Congressman Tim Scott reminds students to apply for appointments to one of the U.S. service academies by Oct. 31.

Congressman Tim Scott (R-S.C.) reminds all interested parties of the approaching deadline for accepting nomination applications from individuals who are seeking an appointment to one of the U.S. service academies.

The deadline is Oct. 31.

"I urge all interested high school seniors to consider making an application to our nation’s military service academies," Scott said. "The academies offer an excellent opportunity for those willing to rise to the challenges of a military education."

The Congressman will nominate top students who apply for the highly sought-after academy appointments in December 2011 for the class entering the Summer of 2012. He is currently accepting applications for nominations to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs; the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.  

Seniors, who have not done so, should begin the appointment process immediately by submitting an application to Congressman Scott.

Nominees are chosen based on personal merit, including evidence of character, leadership, academic excellence, physical aptitude and extracurricular activities. The application should also be made to each service academy in which they may have an interest in attending.

Applicants must be 17 to 23 years old by July 1 in the year of admission, unmarried with no dependents, a U.S. citizen and legal resident of South Carolina’s First Congressional District.
