Drag Way Death in Sunday Race

Barry Lynn Wright, 40, of North Charleston died after his truck overturned during race.

Dorchester County deputies responded to a fatal wreck at Dorchester Drag Way around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Barry Lynn Wright, 40, of North Charleston died after his pickup truck was allegedly clipped by a fellow racer's vehicle, which had gone out of control, according to the incident report.

The collision allegedly entrapped Wright and emergency medical staff pronounced him dead before deputies reached the scene, according to the report.

According to witnesses, fellow racer Tara Lee Griffin, 24, of Summerville operated her vehicle in the left lane. Griffin stated in the report that the back end of her vehicle "got loose" and as her car spun, she "clipped" Wright's truck. Wright and Griffin were the only two racing, according to the report.

According to another witness, Griffin's husband Robert Roy Griffin Jr., the truck was clipped, and the driver hit the brakes before colliding with the guard rail. Another witness observed the truck flipped over the guard rail in the report.

Dorchester County Coronor Chris Nisbet said Wright died of positional asphyxia.

A call was made on Monday morning to the person listed as track safety on the drag way's website, but the phone went unanswered by person or voicemail.
