Firefighters Rescue Dog

Responding to a fire Wednesday evening in Summerville, firefighters and EMS save dog trapped in house.

Responding to a fire Wednesday at 701 Sasportas Lane, firefighters discovered a shepherd-mix dog inside the home during a search and brought the dog to safety where EMS resuscitated the animal, according to Summerville Fire Chief Marc Melfi.

The fire was noticed by two people walking down the road around 8 p.m.

When firefighters entered the structure, they found the fire in the bedroom and then found the dog lying on the kitchen floor.

"They did bring the dog back, and he got up and was barking," Melfi said. "He was jumping up and wagging his tail when we left there. It's a very successful story."

The owner of the dog, described as very grateful, stopped by the fire department today to thank responders, Melfi said. The owner was not listed in the phone book so Patch was unable to contact him.

Melfi said two of the firefighters who aided in the rescue are Christopher Berry and Candace Bishop-Accord.
