Girl Allegedly Assaulted in School Bathroom

Deputies arrest Givhans Alternative student after alleged incident.

Dorchester County deputies arrested a Givhans Alternative student following a Nov. 9 incident in which a student resource officer responded to a complaint of a boy and girl alone in a boys' bathroom.

The 13-year-old victim alleged the older boy had tried to force sexual contact, according to the incident report. In the report, the reporting officer noted that video surveillence showed the two children were in the bathroom for 22 minutes.

According to the victim, the boy eventually left her alone in the bathroom, where she locked the stall door and remained until the officer found her. The officer reported that the student did not respond to his verbal attempts to contact her until he looked over the stall divider.

In the report, the victim said the subject was harassing her all day. When the subject dared her to meet him in the bathroom, she did, but then found herself being pushed into a stall, according to the report.

The boy left after she allegedly threatened to kick him, according to the report. She stated — and the officer later notes on the video — that after the subject left, he lingered near the doorway so she couldn't leave the bathroom.

When the student resource officer handcuffed the alleged subject, he said he thought the girl was 15 years old and that he "didn't do anything to that little girl."

The case file was forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice. Minors, both victims and alleged offenders, do not have their names released in incident reports. According to the Solicitor's Office, following a case, such as this, is difficult because minors often do not go through the same system as adults.

In other news at the school, two students were arrested on Nov. 4 for disorderly conduct. One student fought with police and was also arrested for resisting arrest. This case also was forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
