Lincolnville Voted with County for First Time

Town had its first election with Charleston County municipalities.

For Lincolnville, history was made Tuesday. Not by the candidates, but by the day the election was held.

It was the town's first time voting in an odd year along with other Charleston County municipalities.

After the last election in April 2008, the town council explored having the county conduct its elections. When council agreed upon the odd-year, November timing, it added a year and a half to the elected officials terms.

Councilmembers Barbara Dease, Charles Duberry and Anna Williams-Gleaton would have faced re-election in April 2010.

Dease and Duberry ran for re-election Tuesday, while Williams-Gleaton did not run. On election day, only Duberry had re-election signs flanking the roads around the Lincolnville public safety building, where the polls were.

Leland Shannon, a former councilman, and Larry Brown fought for one of the three spots available on council.

By midday, about 50 citizens had voted in Lincolnville.

Mayor Tyrone Aiken, who did not have to defend his seat this election, would have faced re-election April 2012, but now will remain unchallenged until November 2013.
