Majority Whip: Reform, Don't Eliminate NLRB

After recent tour of Boeing plant in North Charleston, the S.C. Congressional delegation and U.S. House Minority Whip talk about the National Labor Relation Board.

With a heated nationwide battle between conservatives and unions regarding Boeing's decision to put a plant in North Charleston, Rep. Tim Scott brought the S.C. Congressional delegation and the House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on a tour of the plant.

Conservatives have argued that the National Labor Relations Board, which has sued Boeing over its alleged maneuvering around pro-union Washington State to come to right-to-work South Carolina, has overstepped its authority.

"There's no question of government interference is happening right now, is killing jobs in our economy," said Scott, a Republican who represents the Lowcountry.

But while some, like Gary Glenn running for U.S. Senate in Michigan, have called for the elimination of the NLRB, McCarthy and Scott seemed reluctant to trash the board.

Regarding a bill in Congress now that seeks to eliminate the board, Scott said he would "certainly take a look at it" but said the focus needed to be on simplifying regulations and legislation to create jobs.

McCarthy also balked.

"We want to make sure the NLRB does what it was created to do but that means commonsense. You do not want to have a government agency who's going to push jobs out of this country," McCarthy said.

, which protects right-to-work states, was cited by McCarthy as one of those commonsense measures to protect jobs.

The U.S. Senate now must address Scott's bill before it goes any further.
