Poll: Senator Proposes Six-Cent Gas Tax Increase

State Sen. Paul Campbell said high mileage vehicles cut into the state's gas tax collection.

By show of hands at the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce legislative luncheon on Thursday, Sen. Paul Campbell's idea to raise the state's current gas tax by six cents found some support. 

The current gas tax is 35.2 cents per gallon, one of the lowest in the nation.

Speaking at the in Summerville, Campbell said the state's infrastructure is in need of investment, including a $30 million investment on Interstate 26 between the exits 194 and 199 to support the Charleston port. That area, which is in his district, could become a magnet for 20,000 jobs, he added.

Campbell said with S.C. Department of Transportation broke, fixing the state's infrastructure is a key priority in 2012.
