Second Suspect Charged in Birdsong Slaying

North Charleston investigators have arrested and charged 17-year-old Jontae Demetrius Davis in connection with the Friday night armed robbery and killing of 20-year-old Maraelius Birdsong outside of the Appian Way Apartment complex.  

Davis turned himself in to police headquarters Tuesday afternoon and has been charged with armed robbery and murder.  

He will be lodged at the Dorchester County Detention Center pending an 11 a.m. bond hearing Wednesday. 

At about 8:30 Friday evening, officers responded to Appian Way Apartments in reference to a male victim being shot during a robbery. On scene, officers located the victim, Birdsong, lying on the ground and suffering from a gunshot wound.  

He later died after being transported to MUSC in critical condition.

Detectives learned Birdsong arrived at the apartment complex to deliver a pizza. Birdsong went to the address that the pizza was to be delivered and learned from the residents that they did not order any food.

As Birdsong was returning to his vehicle, he was approached by a black male, robbed and shot. Witnesses saw two black males flee the area after the gun fire was heard.  

Officers later found Stephawn Sherrod Brown near the scene of the crime and . Brown was denied bond Monday.
