SHS Students Place Top 10 in State Essay Contest

Aaliyah Williams and Tyler Pratt of Summerville High recognized for their essays.

Aaliyah Williams and Tyler Pratt were among the 500 middle and high school students to submit an essay themed "One Billion Hungry in the World: What is your Role?" to South Carolina Dialogue Foundation.

Both Summerville High students are taught in Tarrah Meyer's English II Honors class. And both made the top 10 winners list.

The purpose of this writing competition was to help teachers create an interdisciplinary approach to enhancing several core skills instudents no matter what discipline they may study.

Winners will attend a ceremony March 18 at Clemson University's International Center for Automotive Research in Greenville.

Once the placement of the winners is announced, Aaliyah and Tyler could possibly be eligible to compete in the Southeastern competition that will judge essays from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee,and South Carolina.  The South Carolina Dialogue Foundationwill distribute 47 awards.

If Tyler or Aaliyah is chosen as the top winner, he or she will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Turkey for 10 days. Other prizes include an Ipod Touch, an Apple iPad 2Tablet, an Amazon Kindle and gift cards ranging from $25-$75.
