Summerville High Student Charged with Assault

Wednesday's victim of assault on school grounds treated for lacerations, concussion, broken nose and chipped teeth.

A 16-year-old student has been charged with assault and second-degree battery in a Wednesday incident at Summerville High School. 

According to a Summerville Police incident report, the alleged perpetrator had made "threatening comments" towards the 15-year-old victim earlier in the day. In the report, the victim stated he did not know who the suspect was.

At around 11 a.m., the suspect approached the victim between the courtyard and the library alleyway, where he allegedly began punching the other boy in the face, according to the report.

After falling to the ground, the boy walked himself to the nurse's office to be treated. Later, his mother took him to Palmetto Primary Care, where he was treated for lacerations, a broken nose, a concussion and three chipped teeth.

The report stated that, when confronted, the alleged perpetrator said he was "just play 'slap box' with the victim." 

Slap-boxing is slang for fighting with open hands where the fighters do not attempt to injure one another. 

When Summerville Police arrived, the suspect was already in custody of the school resource officer, but allegedly trying to pull his hands free from the handcuffs, according to the report. Police then tightened the handcuffs and placed him in leg restraints, the report stated. 

The boy arrested was released to his mother. According to the report, expulsion is the next step.
