Town Gives Final Say on Mayoral Power

Summerville Town Council votes to reorganize town structure, giving Mayor Bill Collins administrative duties.

Town council voted unanimously Wednesday night on a measure that amends the structure of government, giving the mayor administrative duties, during the regular meeting at .

The town administrator position has been vacant for months, and when new Mayor Bill Collins , gaining administrative duties under that title became one of his key agenda items. 

At first, the town explored . However, research found that the town could keep the council-form of government it currently operates under and just add administrative duties to the mayor's position. A temporary measure in July until the second and final reading of the amendment could occur at tonight's meeting.

Collins is currently paid $15,000 a year under his title of mayor, and cannot raise his salary until next year.

During Wednesday's meeting, he said he plans to hire an assistant to the mayor in 2012.
