Man sentenced in jewelry theft case involving Brookings store (brookingsregister.com) — A man has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison for a March burglary at Riddle's Jewelry on 22nd Avenue in Brookings, where diamond rings worth over $78,000 were stolen. Brookings police and the county state's attorney say diligent investigation led to his April arrest and the recovery of all stolen merchandise, closing a high-value local theft case.
   

2. Boys & Girls Club Launches 'Prairie Sparks' Program at Medary and Hillcrest (brookingsradio.com) — Families in the Brookings School District can now access Prairie Sparks, a free after-school academic enrichment program for junior kindergarten through third-grade students at Medary and Hillcrest elementary schools, starting October 5. Run by Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains, it offers daily tutoring, mentoring, snacks, field trips, and even complimentary Boys & Girls Club of Brookings membership, while also hiring local staff for paid part-time roles.
   

3. Brookings building permits hit $117 million value (keloland.com) — Brookings has already logged over $117 million in building permits through August, its second-highest total ever, driven by Bel Brands expansions and steady new housing. City officials and longtime business owners say growth is especially strong on the east and south sides, following a record $300 million permit year in 2023 that included major infrastructure and industrial projects.
   

4. Brookings Area United Way celebrates Dolly Parton's legacy (brookingsregister.com) — Families in Brookings County can enroll children from birth to age five in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which mails a free book each month. Brookings Area United Way runs the program locally, and Mayor Ope Niemeyer recently joined readings at several Brookings-area preschools while residents were encouraged to donate or sign up online to sustain the service.
   

5. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis to Perform in Brookings Oct. 11 (brookingsradio.com) — World-renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra are coming to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center in Brookings on October 11, with only about 100–150 tickets left. Local organizers call it a rare, possibly last regional chance to hear Marsalis with the group, and encourage residents to grab remaining seats through the Woodbine Productions series.
