1. Hungry Hearts expands school support with free back-to-school event (siouxfallslive.com subscription) — Families in Sioux Falls can pick up free backpacks, supplies, shoes and a meal at a Hungry Hearts back-to-school party today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. downtown. The nonprofit is also raising money to help families just above the free-and-reduced lunch threshold cover school meal costs, with applications handled through the Sioux Falls School District.
2. Why South Dakota lakes often face recurring summer algae (dakotanewsnow.com) — Sioux Falls officials are warning people and pets to stay out of Wall Lake after a toxic algae bloom triggered a high advisory this week. An SDSU water specialist explains how warming temperatures and nutrients fuel recurring blooms at Wall Lake and Twin Lakes, urging caution even as some longtime visitors say they've never had health issues.
3. McCrossan Boys Ranch hosts 18th annual rodeo (keloland.com) — McCrossan Boys Ranch is hosting its 18th annual Xtreme Challenge Rodeo today in Sioux Falls, with barrel racing, bull riding and mutton busting raising money for boys' programs and therapy. Tickets are no longer available online, but you can still buy them at McCrossan Boys Ranch or Haegle's Western Wear & Tack if you want to catch the action and support local youth.
4. Monarchs use the long ball to beat Canaries (keloland.com) — The Sioux Falls Canaries fell 7–2 at the Birdcage after the Kansas City Monarchs launched three home runs to control Friday night's game. Trevor Achenbach homered and doubled for the Birds, who slipped to 43–42 but will try to even the three-game series at home this evening at 5:35 p.m.
