📰 News we're reading

1. Could your child's back-to-school photo be a roadmap for a stranger? (dakotanewsnow.com) — Sioux Falls school and police officials are urging parents to think twice before posting detailed back-to-school photos that could reveal where and when their kids can be found. They recommend tightening social media privacy settings, avoiding school names and other location clues, and talking with children about online interactions and stranger danger so those first-day snapshots stay celebratory, not risky.

2. Grand Forks contingent plans trip to Sioux Falls, hoping to confirm steps, hear advice (grandforksherald.com) — Sioux Falls' transformation of Falls Park and downtown—through the Phillips to the Falls project, trail upgrades, and new riverfront businesses—is now a model for Grand Forks leaders visiting next month. The story highlights how local leaders, past mayor Dave Munson, and years of investment turned a neglected industrial riverfront into a busy, walkable destination that draws residents and tourists to central Sioux Falls.

3. Solutions-based programs filling resource gaps in schools (kornradio.com) — A Sioux Falls-based nonprofit, Promising Futures Fund, is expanding its support for high-poverty schools while already backing 21 Sioux Falls campuses with field trips, clubs and family events. Alongside programs like JAG-SD, these efforts aim to close opportunity gaps for local students facing significant economic and academic barriers and help them prepare for college, careers and life after graduation.

4. Chef Lance's on Phillips will not participate in 2027 Burger Battle (dakotanewsnow.com) — A popular downtown Sioux Falls spot, Chef Lance's On Phillips, says it will sit out the 2027 DTSF Burger Battle despite winning the contest twice. The owners cite staff burnout and major operational strain during the monthlong competition, though they still praise the event's impact and plan to support it as enthusiastic burger-eating customers instead of competitors.

5. Big Third inning Allows Monarchs Sweep Over Canaries (monarchsbaseball.com) — Sioux Falls Canaries fans saw their team jump ahead early at the Birdcage before the Kansas City Monarchs stormed back with a huge third inning to complete a weekend sweep. Despite home runs and late pushes from Sioux Falls hitters, Monarchs power bats and strong pitching held the Canaries just short in an 8–6 loss.
