Today's riddle: Why was the scarecrow given an award? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Judge sends Smithfield conditional use permit back to city (sdnewswatch.org) — A Minnehaha County judge has voided Smithfield Foods' conditional use permit for its planned pork plant in northwest Sioux Falls, sending the decision back to the City Council. The ruling found the city failed to follow its own ordinances and 2050 plan, particularly on neighborhood input, utility impact reports, and mitigation for nearby rural homeowners. Council members must now reconsider the application under stricter scrutiny.
2. Hadrick Ranch looks to open storefront in Sioux Falls (keloland.com) — A longtime South Dakota ranch is planning to open a dedicated beef storefront in Sioux Falls next spring or early summer, expanding beyond its existing restaurant partnerships. Backed by a USDA Value-Added Producer Grant, the Hadrick family hopes the shop will keep more cattle, feed, and service dollars circulating in-state while giving local customers easier access to their products.
3. Sioux Falls man surprised with free HVAC system (dakotanewsnow.com) — A Sioux Falls father of four, Jeff Poppenga, just received a free Lennox heating and cooling system through the annual "Feel the Love" campaign, installed by Howe Plumbing and Heating. After years of disability following a back injury, he says the surprise support from local businesses and neighbors makes asking for help feel less daunting and keeps his family safer at home.
4. House Candidates Disagree On Tariffs, Oppose Beef Imports (yankton.net) — A U.S. House debate held in Sioux Falls put tariffs, beef imports, and rural healthcare funding in the spotlight for South Dakota voters. Republican Marty Jackley largely defended targeted tariffs and the Big Beautiful Bill's state-directed health funds, while Democrat Nikki Gronli criticized Trump-era tariff chaos, warned about Medicaid work requirements, and called for renewed research into Native American boarding schools.
