Sign honoring fallen Torrance police detective to be installed in Hermosa Beach (dailybreeze.com) — Torrance is moving forward with a long-delayed memorial sign honoring Detective Gary Rippstein, who was killed in the line of duty after being shot in Hermosa Beach in 1968. After a request from Torrance’s mayor, Hermosa Beach has approved installing the sign at the original incident site, while Torrance will handle all costs and maintenance and keep its existing memorial at police headquarters.

Trump says no to wearing bulletproof vest over concerns about his figure (syracuse.com) — A Torrance resident, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, has been charged by federal authorities in connection with a recent assassination attempt on President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The president later joked about refusing a bulletproof vest over concerns about his appearance, while praising the body armor that protected a Secret Service agent during the attack.
   

3. Man Pleads Guilty as Part of Violent Street Takeover (mynewsla.com) — A 22-year-old Torrance resident has pleaded guilty to felony charges in a reckless driving street takeover that seriously injured two spectators in Anaheim in 2024. Prosecutors say the victims suffered severe burns and broken bones after being struck and trapped under a spinning Dodge Charger. The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
   

4. New Footage Shows Police K9 Followed Would-Be Trump Assassin Moments Before Attack (tampafp.com) — A former teacher from Torrance is at the center of new security footage showing the suspect moving through the Hilton Hotel just before the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Prosecutors released video of a police K9 briefly following him into a side room, details of his weapons, and confirmation that multiple serious federal charges are moving toward trial.
