UPDATE: Missing Chattanooga 3-year-old found safe Friday afternoon (local3news.com) — A Chattanooga 3-year-old reported missing near Boynton Drive on Friday morning has been found safe, according to Hamilton County Emergency Management. Authorities had asked residents to watch for Caleb Johnson and call 911 or Chattanooga Police with any information. The quick resolution ends a tense search that drew county emergency services and Homeland Security support.
2. Chattanooga City Council weighs future of police services building one year after mold, asbestos discovery (local3news.com) — Chattanooga's City Council is debating whether to spend about $17.5 million fixing widespread mold and asbestos in the Police Services Building or move to a new facility that could cost up to $35 million. While the front lobby remains closed, residents can access front-desk services at the Hamilton County Schools East Brainerd Annex on limited hours, though in-person records help is paused. Police Chief John Chambers will outline options at the September 29 council meeting.
3. Moccasin Bend Mental Hospital land planned for historic park, preserving 12,000 year old ancient history (local3news.com) — Chattanooga leaders have confirmed that once Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute relocates to Lookout Valley by 2030, nearly 100 riverfront acres on the bend will be turned into a historic park. The protected site would join the larger Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District, honoring 12,000 years of Indigenous history and creating a major new recreational and educational asset for local residents.
4. Chattanooga celebrates new mural by Artist Cecilia Lueza outside City Hall (wdef.com) — A colorful new mural outside Chattanooga City Hall is giving residents and visitors a fresh gateway into 11th Street and the MLK District. Artist Cecilia Lueza drew on Chattanooga's hills, river, and local bird species to create the piece, funded through the city's Art in Neighborhoods program and local foundations. Organizers hope it strengthens neighborhood identity and public art downtown.
5. UTC Earns 3rd Place In National U.S. Department Of Transportation Innovation Challenge (chattanoogan.com) — Researchers at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga just earned third place and $150,000 in a national U.S. Department of Transportation innovation challenge for their PRISM platform, which uses AI to improve traffic safety and efficiency. The system is being tested on Chattanooga's MLK Smart Corridor and brings together data from road sensors, vehicles, and networks to give real-time insights. Local partners include the City of Chattanooga and major industry players.
