1. Water, sewer work to close part of West Mountainview (johnsoncitypress.com) — West Mountainview Road in Johnson City will close to all through traffic west of Fink Drive starting Monday while city crews install new stormwater infrastructure through Sept. 25. Residents near Fink Drive, The Haven, and Universal must follow marked detours via West Oakland Avenue and Knob Creek Road and should expect construction-zone delays and reduced access for emergency vehicles.
2. Johnson City Commission honors Lottie Ryans for service career (johnsoncitypress.com) — Johnson City's commission has honored longtime public servant Lottie Ryans with its second-ever "Moving Mountains" award and a mayoral proclamation recognizing her decades of service. At the same meeting, commissioners approved a supplemental fiscal 2026 budget and a $900,000 school resource officer grant, formally updating Johnson City's city and school finances for the coming year.
3. M.S. Student Opportunity in Ecological Genomics and Evolutionary Ecology (uw.edu) — East Tennessee State University in Johnson City is recruiting an M.S. student for spring 2027 research in ecological genomics and evolutionary ecology, working with Daphnia on topics like salinity tolerance and longevity. The program offers collaboration across biology disciplines and highlights Johnson City's access to Appalachian natural areas. Application deadlines are October 1 for international and January 1 for domestic students.
4. Washington County-Johnson City EMS hosts annual emergency and medical conference (wjhl.com) — Washington County–Johnson City EMS recently brought first responders to Johnson City for its annual Northeast Tennessee Emergency and Medical conference, offering hands-on training and expert-led seminars. Sessions covered topics from pediatric abuse to K-9 transport, helping local crews stay current on best practices. Organizers are already planning next year's three-day conference in mid-September.
5. TDEC: Investigation 'ongoing' into BWXT wastewater spill (johnsoncitypress.com) — State environmental officials are still investigating a 900-gallon wastewater spill containing chemical degreaser and depleted uranium at BWXT's Jonesborough facility, a concern for residents across the Johnson City area. TDEC and BWXT say cleanup is complete and radiation readings are normal, but state staff are independently testing samples and reviewing data to assess any remaining risk.
