Another year of record-breaking enrollment at UT Knoxville as fall semester begins (wate.com) — UT Knoxville is starting the fall semester with more than 41,000 students, continuing a rapid enrollment surge that's reshaping campus life and housing in the city. New dorms are already open, more residence halls are planned, and major academic buildings are under construction, changes that will affect traffic, housing demand, and daily routines around Knoxville.
2. New facility at L&N STEM Academy in Knoxville will train educators from across Tennessee (wate.com) — A new education building at Knoxville's L&N STEM Academy is underway, promising more space for local students and hands-on training for teachers in fields like robotics, advanced manufacturing, and nuclear energy. Backed by state, Knox County, and UT-Battelle funding, the facility will also host community programs and partnerships that bring cutting-edge STEM opportunities to Knoxville residents year-round.
3. Beth Wytiaz, Knoxville (bbbtv12.com) — Knoxville residents are remembering 73-year-old Beth Wytiaz, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Known as a devoted mother, wife, and talented competitor in many games and sports, she leaves behind sons Tom and Greg and a brother, Richard Helms. A small private service will be held, with Holley Gamble Funeral Home handling arrangements.
4. University of Tennessee students return for the first day of the 2026 fall semester (knoxnews.com) — Students are back on campus at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, filling walkways, buses, and gathering spots like the Humanities Amphitheatre and Student Union on the first day of fall classes. Photos capture busy scenes around Ayres Hall, Volunteer Boulevard, and other familiar landmarks as the city's flagship campus roars back to life for a new semester.
5. Maria Guzman (fox5atlanta.com) — Former WBIR multimedia journalist Maria Guzman spent three years reporting from Knoxville, covering everything from Hurricane Helene's impact on Appalachian communities to East Tennessee's struggle with addiction and overdose prevention. Her work here earned recognition from the Metro Drug Coalition and included helping launch the "More Than a Number" series honoring crime victims. She has since moved to Atlanta to join FOX 5 but credits Knoxville as a key chapter in her career.
