Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Sumner Co. property transfers, July 2-8, 2026 (mainstreetmediatn.com) — Recent Sumner County property transfers include numerous home and land sales in Portland, with prices ranging from about $80,000 to $700,000. If you're watching the local housing market, this list shows exactly which Portland addresses changed hands and for how much during the first week of July.
2. Portland Middle School unites east and west to shut out rival White House, 12-0 (lebanondemocrat.com) — Portland Middle's combined East and West squad capped its season by shutting out rival White House 12-0, highlighted by a last-minute, improvised touchdown pass. Coach Kyle Lane says uniting the two programs has created a single, promising team and urges the Portland community to rally behind the players' growing momentum and hard-nosed defense.
3. Police say Flock camera system, 'grappler' device led to arrest of suspect in killing of Kentucky trooper (wsmv.com) — A Portland resident has been charged in the fatal shooting of Kentucky State Trooper Hayden Phillips, and Louisville police say new technology helped track the suspect's vehicle. Investigators combined cell phone data, Flock license plate readers, and a grappler device to stop the car on Dixie Highway and make an arrest without a high-speed chase, underscoring growing regional use of surveillance tools.
4. Fallen trooper's handcuffs were placed on murder suspect after arrest, KSP commissioner says (wkyt.com) — A man from Portland was arrested in Louisville about four hours after Kentucky State Trooper Hayden Phillips was fatally shot during a traffic stop on I-65. Kentucky State Police leaders say coordinated work by multiple agencies allowed them to place Phillips' own handcuffs on the suspect, while the governor ordered flags lowered and a foundation began collecting donations for the trooper's family.
5. Documents detail moments before KSP trooper's death (wkrn.com) — Police investigating a Kentucky trooper's fatal shooting traced the suspect's car tags to a home in Portland helping them identify and locate him. The man is now jailed without bond on a murder charge, with officials calling for swift justice and sharing how the loss has shaken law enforcement families across the region.
