• DeKalb County Florist Celebrates 35 Years in Business (herald-citizen.com) — A longtime Smithville favorite, DeKalb County Florist has been honored by the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce for 35 years of serving local families. The shop has grown from floral arrangements to a full range of home décor and gifts, and community leaders say its success highlights the importance of locally owned businesses to DeKalb County's character and economy.
• Meeting held over SRM expansion (herald-citizen.com) — Residents near the Smithville Quarry are urging state regulators to reject a major expansion that would more than triple the permitted mining area and continue wastewater discharges into Driver Branch near Dowelltown. Locals say nearby creeks and wells are already drying up and worry about long-term water quality. State officials will accept written comments on the permit through October 5 before deciding whether to approve, modify, or deny it.
