Texas Woman Uses Restroom. Then She Sees Something Furry in the Toilet: 'New Fear Unlocked'
'Babe your fear isn't irrational.'
Sometimes irrational fears become completely justified. When a Texas woman posted a TikTok featuring a furry animal wedged inside a toilet bowl, viewers across the internet quickly weighed in with theories ranging from invasive nutria to sewer-dwelling rats, before the truth came out.
The viral clip from TikTokker Chrystal (@riveraoflove), which has been viewed more than 856,000 times, sets up the drama. The creator explained that she habitually looks into any toilet she’s about to use. During a recent bathroom visit, that “just in case” look revealed a small, furry animal trapped at the bottom of the bowl.
“I always check the toilet to make sure nothing is in there. I don't know if I watched a scary movie as a kid, but it's always been an irrational fear of mine that something will be in the toilet and it will crawl out and attack me,” she said in a follow-up clip.

Guessing Game Begins
The viral video itself doesn’t offer many clues as to the type of animal. The animal appears motionless, partially submerged near the toilet’s drain opening, its body orientation unclear. Viewers quickly began debating whether it was even facing the camera the right way. Some mistook its paws for eyes. Others pointed to what looked like whiskers.
That ambiguity helped fuel a comment-sections free-for-all, with hundreds of viewers offering confident identifications and warnings. Some insisted the animal was a nutria, an invasive semi-aquatic rodent known to inhabit waterways across Texas and much of the southern United States. Others pushed back, arguing that nutria are much larger and unlikely to fit through residential plumbing. Still more suggested rats, moles, raccoons, or even baby seals, sometimes jokingly, sometimes in earnest.

Several commenters shared horror stories of animals entering homes through plumbing vents or sewer lines, prompting a wave of reactions from viewers who said the video had unlocked a new fear of public restrooms.
What are Nutria?
The nutria theory gained traction in part because the species is well known in Texas and neighboring states. Nutria are invasive rodents originally brought to North America from South America in the early 20th century for the fur trade, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They are now widespread across the Gulf Coast and are commonly found in canals, drainage ditches, ponds, and slow-moving waterways.
Texas Parks & Wildlife officials note that nutria can cause significant environmental damage by undermining banks and levees and destroying wetland vegetation. Because they are strong swimmers and comfortable in murky water, some viewers assumed the animal in the toilet could have entered through plumbing connected to municipal sewer systems.
However, wildlife experts generally caution against assuming animals commonly emerge from toilets. While rodents such as rats are known to navigate sewer systems, larger mammals typically enter homes through roof vent stacks or exterior openings rather than traveling upward through water-filled traps.
As the clip circulated, many viewers shifted from identification to self-preservation. Commenters admitted they now check toilets before sitting down. Others referenced horror movies and urban legends involving creatures emerging from drains. A few urged the creator to call animal control or building maintenance immediately.
Chrystal herself acknowledged that the anxiety struck a nerve. In her follow-up video, she said she was surprised by how many people shared the same fear she had long assumed was irrational.
“Happy to know that there’s several of y’all that had that same irrational fear,” she said. “Scarred for life officially.”
What Was The Animal?
While viewers continued to debate the animal’s identity, Chrystal said she was trying to deal with the situation offline. She attempted to remove it herself, but couldn’t get a clear look or safely extract it.
Eventually, help arrived.
In her follow-up video, she explained that her niece’s boyfriend shut off the water supply, put on gloves, and removed the animal from the toilet. What came out was not what many viewers had expected.
It was a full-grown adult squirrel.
“Like, full big squirrel,” she said, adding that the animal was already deceased by the time it was removed. “Never seen anything in my life like that.”
While startling, wildlife experts say situations like this are usually the result of accidental entry rather than animals traveling through sewer systems. According to guidance from state wildlife agencies and pest control professionals, squirrels and other small mammals often gain access to buildings through rooflines, attic vents or uncapped plumbing vent stacks.
Once inside a structure’s venting system, animals can fall into vertical pipes and become trapped, eventually ending up in toilets or drains. Texas Parks & Wildlife and similar agencies routinely advise homeowners to install vent covers and inspect roof openings to prevent wildlife intrusions.
Though uncommon, these incidents tend to leave a lasting impression—especially when they intersect with long-held fears.
Irrational Fear Comes True
For Chrystal, the experience confirmed something she had always suspected.
“I always check the toilet,” she said. “Nothing phases me anymore.”
Judging by the reaction online, plenty of viewers may be adopting the same habit. What began as a routine bathroom stop turned into a viral reminder that some fears, no matter how unlikely they seem, feel a lot more rational once they stare back from the bottom of a toilet bowl.
