📰 News we're reading

1. Arlington Leads Nation in Apartment Shrinkage, Frisco Goes Bigger (candysdirt.com) — If you've noticed new Arlington apartments feeling tighter, you're right: units built here since 2016 average 287 fewer square feet than those from the prior decade, the biggest drop among major U.S. cities. While average size still hovers near the national norm, more small studios and one-bedrooms mean renters may be paying similar prices for less living space.

2. The Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce 2026 Small Business Award Recipients Announced (fortworthbusiness.com) — Arlington's top small businesses for 2026 have been named by the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce, with honorees to be celebrated at the State of the City on Oct. 29. From Advanced Integrated Marketing to Levitt Pavilion Arlington and local favorites like Marcona Kitchen and The Runner Shop, the awards spotlight homegrown companies deeply involved in community events and services across the city.

3. Veterans Park flag display recognizes sacrifice of 9/11 first responders (theshorthorn.com) — Veterans Park in Arlington is filled with 911 American flags this Patriot Week, creating a powerful 9/11 remembrance display that remains up through Sept. 12. Local volunteers and Arlington residents describe the field of flags as a moving tribute to first responders and victims, and organizers hope neighbors will keep returning each year to reflect and remember together.

4. 1,800 North Texans to Pack More Than 450,000 Meals on 9/11 in Tribute to National Day of Service (northdallasgazette.com) — On Sept. 11, Esports Stadium Arlington will host more than 1,800 DFW volunteers packing over 450,000 meals for North Texas families in need as part of the 9/11 National Day of Service. Participants will work in assembly-line shifts, hear keynote speaker Kenneth Capps share his 9/11 DFW Airport story, and join a citywide effort to honor the attacks' anniversary through hands-on service.

5. Hillsboro Crash Arlington Residents: 2 Killed in Chain-Reaction Pileup (arlingtonnetwork.com) — Two Arlington residents were killed and two others critically injured in a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash near Hillsboro, prompting renewed safety warnings for local drivers. Investigators suspect alcohol contributed to the initial collision and are still reconstructing the incident, while authorities urge Arlington-area motorists to avoid impaired driving, stay in vehicles after crashes when safer, and use extra caution around farm equipment on rural highways.
