Culture Buzz: Arlington’s River Legacy Living Science Center

Arlington’s River Legacy Living Science Center is the gateway to River Legacy Park. The center is known for its educational classes and interactive trips outdoors.

But like so many other organizations, staff members found themselves facing a new challenge. How do you connect families to the outdoors while they’re staying inside?

“Because we are the largest provider of environmental education in all of North Texas, we feel like that importance and the necessity of connecting people with nature has not lessened one bit with the coronavirus,” said River Legacy Director of Development Becky Nussbaum Gerro. “So what we’re doing is increasing our public programming online.”

The Center is releasing new content daily at 2 p.m. on its Facebook page. The schedule includes:

• Monday Storytimes
• Tuesday and Thursday: Facebook Live segments with an animal and staff member
• Wow Wednesday activity or experiment
• Fun Fact Friday

Staff say they’re proud to continue their mission in a new format. And the community response has reinforced how important the work is.

“People are looking for good news. People are looking for things that make you feel better. Certainly nature, animals, the beautiful wildflowers, all of that makes you feel better. We’ve had so many people really grateful and appreciative,” Nussbaum Gerro said.
