📰 News we're reading

• Bellaire south detention basin site clearing to wrap up (communityimpact.com) — Work to clear the site for Bellaire's new south detention basin on Beechnut is nearly finished, bringing the city a step closer to added flood protection. With demolition done and privacy screening up near Congregation Beth Yeshurun, officials expect design work to wrap by year's end so construction and curb repairs around the former car wash can move ahead.

• Emery/Weiner students enjoy Rosh Hashanah Mitzvah Moments (jhvonline.com) — Students at The Emery/Weiner School recently marked Rosh Hashanah with "Mitzvah Moments," wrapping tefillin, receiving Shabbat candles, and enjoying sweet challah during a visit from Rabbi Yossi and Esty Zaklikofsky. The program, initiated by two juniors, helps teens celebrate their Jewish identity, and CTeen Bellaire plans to return throughout the school year with more hands-on experiences.

• Betty June Freeland, 94 – WLKM Radio 95.9 FM (wlkm.com) — Bellaire residents are remembering 94-year-old Betty June Freeland, who passed away September 1 at the Gardens of Bellaire after a life rich in family, friendship, travel, and music. A former Michigan librarian and devoted church singer, she spent her final years in Bellaire, where caregivers cherished her spontaneous songs; a memorial service will be held later in Sturgis, Michigan.
