Austin Animal Shelter Takes In More Than Two Dozen Cats From Cedar Park Hoarding Case

The intake of 29 cats at the already at-capacity shelter comes in the wake of the arrival of four other cats, two dogs from abuse case.

AUSTIN, TX — Austin animal shelter officials took in more than two dozen cats on Friday, the felines arriving as part of a hoarding case in neighboring Cedar Park.

The 29 cats arrived at a time when Austin Pets Alive!already is filled to capacity, Spectrum News noted. To house the influx, officials had to open up a large conference room as temporary housing, the news station reported.

"For this particular case, we're looking for fosters, we're looking for adopters and we're looking for donations because we will have upwards at least $5,000 in immediate medical needs for these care," Mary Heerwald with Austin Pets Alive! told the news station.

The cats also arrived on the heels of another intake involving four cats and two dogs on Friday connected to a Bastrop County animal cruelty case, officials noted. Those wishing to adopt the displaced animals will have adoption fees waived, according to shelter officials.

For the time being however, the incoming cats are under quarantine, according to CBS Austin. The news station reported the cats could have Calicivirus, a potentially fatal respiratory infection to which cats are most susceptible.
