Austin's I-35, Cedar Park's US-183 Two of Top 100 Most Congested Texas Roads

Several stretches of Interstate 35 were named to the top 100 list of the most congested roads in Texas.

One year after placing second, Austin’s Interstate 35 has been named the most congested road in Texas.

Several stretches of the highway are featured in the annual top 100 most congested list compiled by the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M.

The undisputed king? I-35 between US-290 and SH-71, which runs right through the heart of downtown.

But I-35 doesn’t let up after that stretch. From SH-71 to Slaughter Lane the highway ranks 24th, from Parmer Lane to US 290 the road ranks 41st, between RM-1431 to SH-45 is the 56th most congested road, from Slaughter Lane to SH-45 it’s #66 and finally from SH-45 to Parmer Lane the road ranks #99.

That’s 6 stretches of I-35 on the top 100.

US-183, which runs through both Cedar Park and Leander and connects with I-35, was named on the list twice at Nos. 65 and 75.

And according to the study, Texas roads are getting more congested every year.

“Year after year we see one theme that continues to resonate,” said Marc Williams, the Interim Deputy Director of the department of transportation, in a press release. “Our growing communities and worsening traffic congestion in Texas are, in fact, very real, and they call for a variety of solutions.”

In the past 40 years the number of registered vehicles is up 172 percent compared to a 19 percent growth in highway space.

In short: Texas is outgrowing its infrastructure.

Rounding out the top five behind I-35 are I-610 West Loop in Houston, The Eastex (US-59) and Southwest Freeways (US-59) in Houston and Stemmons Freeway (I-35E) in Dallas.

This year’s top 100 list featured 29 new roads that didn’t make it last year.
